Residential Construction Contracts: Competitive Bid
Hiring a residential contractor shouldn’t be all that hard but you should think long and hard about the type of contract you have with your contractor. A competitively bid contract may be the most common but is it the best one for you?

Meetings are a Waste of Time
Despite how much I like to talk, I think most meetings are a complete waste of time. At least half of the meetings I sit in on, nothing is really happening other than the swapping of stories. One on hand that’s okay because I’m like the Pecos Bill of story swapping, I simply don’t have the time for it anymore.

Privacy, Architecture, and the Internet
Privacy on the internet is a serious matter and with all the opportunities for architects to share their information, certain considerations need to be made … it’s not always our information to share.

Official Apple 'Spaceship' Campus Model Makes Its Debut
It’s been more than two years since Apple announced plans to build a new “spaceship” campus in Cupertino, Calif., and today, the Internet has been treated to a first look at a 3D model of Apple’s proposed new “spaceship” headquarters.
The San Jose Mercury News was given a sneak peek of a model of Apple’s new proposed campus before it goes before the Cupertino City Council on Tuesday
The committee will have to vote on the project before any construction begins.
Although this is the first physical model the public has seen of the new facility, previous renderings revealed a dark-colored roof with solar panels, a corporate auditorium, additional parking and a jogging path. Images also included a 45,000 square foot fitness center. Read more…

Apple's Jony Ive Designs Ultra-Sleek Office Desk
When he’s not designing iconic Apple products such as the iPhone, Apple’s VP of Design Jony Ive is passing time creating other beautiful objects
This time, he teamed up with designer Marc Newson to create the (RED) Desk, a thin desk made of solid aluminum that looks like the perfect companion for a MacBook Air. The two-legged desk, fabricated by Neal Feay Company, features a cellular surface pattern, and generally looks like something from a sci-fi movie
The desk will be sold at the (RED) auction, Sotheby’s in New York on November 23, along with other design objects selected by Newson and Ive. These include the recently revealed special edition Leica camera, a white Steinway Grand Piano, customized by Ive and Newson, as well as unique, 18K solid rose gold Apple earpods Read more…

Doris Sung explains the tech behind her breathing, eco-friendly architecture (video)
Doris Sung has spent the past few years designing “breathing” architecture that adapts to environmental conditions. Thanks to an overview of her work at The Creators Project, we now have a simple explanation of how Sung creates these responsive structures. Her walls and windows are based on multi-layer metal “skins” that curl when certain layers react to heat — the brighter the sun shines, the wider the skins open to let colder air through. Special software shapes each panel to maximize the cooling effect, even for very curvy surfaces. Sung’s approach hasn’t seen much real-world use so far, but she hopes for energy-efficient buildings that need very little air conditioning to remain comfortable.
